Job Summary: The Associate Provost, Student Success will ensure that: ADU is among the very best in the region for student success, including retention, achievement and employability; our taught programs are attractive, responsive to regional needs and support our ambitions for growth in student numbers; our facilities and teaching methods are based on good practice; student engagement is among the best in the region; our academic staff are able to, and supported to, provide outstanding teaching; and that the University is recognized for excellence in teaching, learning and student engagement. Reporting to the Provost, the post-holder will work closely with the Deans of Colleges, Directors of Al Ain and Dubai Campuses, Student Affairs, Enrolment and Marketing, Accreditation, the Students’ Council and other internal and external stakeholders (for example, accreditation bodies). The post is full time, with 20 per cent of time available to maintain and develop the post-holder’s teaching and research profile.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy Formulation:

  • Ensures delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan, meeting relevant performance indicators and leading endeavors that will enhance the reputation of the University.
  • Acts as the University champion on student success, ensuring that best practice in enhancing student achievement is developed and applied at the University. Develop and implement evidence-based strategies designed continually to enhance student performance, including graduation rates.
  • Designs and implements integrated and comprehensive, evidence based student retention strategy and to ensure that academic advising, learning support and other relevant services are sharply focused on improving student retention and achievement.

Collaboration:

  • Works jointly with the Director of Student Affairs and other stakeholders, contribute to the development and implementation of integrated strategies and policies that will improve student engagement and satisfaction with academic and non-academic life at the University.
  • Works with the Provost and the Deans, ensures that the University’s portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, corporate and doctoral programs is attractive, financially viable and intellectually challenging that will produce academically accomplished and highly employable graduates and enable the University to meet its growth ambitions.
  • Works with the Deans and other internal and external stakeholders, continually to develop and implement effective strategies for the curricular and extra-curricular provision of enterprise, skills and employability education, enhancing student employability.
  • Leads the development and adoption of innovative practice in learning, teaching and assessment, including the use of technology-enhanced and e-learning, to improve student learning experience, satisfaction and outcomes.

 Quality Assurance and Community Outreach:

  • Ensures that the University’s quality monitoring and enhancement processes are fit for purpose, play a key role in (where appropriate lead) quality reviews, accreditations and professional body reviews, and to ensure that such reviews support the achievement of institutional strategic objectives and enhance student achievement and learning experience.
  • Leads and/or supports the development of educational partnerships, nationally and internationally, including with public and corporate bodies, and to ensure the quality and financial viability of such partnerships.
  • Supports the Provost and Deans in developing processes that help the University to attract and retain academic and related staff of the highest quality and to devise and implement mechanisms for the professional development of such staff.
  • Represents the University and the Provost nationally and internationally, raising the profile and reputation of the University and influencing policies and bodies in areas of interest to the University.
  • Maintains and develops a personal academic profile that will command respect among internal and external peers and other stakeholders.
  • Undertakes other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Provost or Chancellor.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Doctorate from an internationally accredited university in a relevant field. Professorial standing or equivalent.
  • Four years of senior academic leadership experience, such as Chair/Head of a large department, Associate Dean or Dean of faculty or college. Experience and standing to command respect of senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Fluent in English, Arabic language is desirable.
  • Evidence of being student focused. Strategic leadership experience that demonstrates significant achievements in improving student outcomes and faculty performance at faculty or university level. Experience in engaging students in their own learning through curricular and extra-curricular activities, and enhancing student satisfaction. Qualities and experience to lead senior colleagues who are not direct line reports. Previous experience of working with professional services to support improvements in student outcomes. Experience and ability to represent the University to external stakeholders such as accrediting bodies, business, government departments, schools and local communities. Evidence of external recognition of standing in teaching, learning and student experience (e.g. representation on external bodies, accreditation and review panels, and senior fellowships).
  • Student focused. Able to motivate, enthuse and persuade. Develop and implement strategy. Lead significant change. Inclusive and nurturing, committed to developing others. Skilled as teacher and mentor, abreast of developments in technology enhanced learning and pedagogic methods.
